Oasis - Overseas Adoption Support and Information Service

OASIS holds a seminar at least twice annually. Speakers are often international experts on adoption issues, many of them based in the USA where international adoption services are very well developed, leading to a wealth of expertise. Information will also usually be made available through the MOSAIC newsletter and e-newsletters.

OASIS A.G.M. – Saturday 14th November 2009

This year the A.G.M. will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel near the NEC, Birmingham. Note that this is the one near the airport NOT the one in the city centre at Holiday St: www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/cp/1/en/hotel/bhxpw . The full address is:

Date and Time: 2pm on Saturday the 14th November.

The formal agenda will contain updates on the accounts, membership, re-election/election of committee members etc.
The remainder of the afternoon will be devoted to country updates, and so if anyone who has adopted recently from a ‘new’ country, or one that is still working albeit difficult, and is willing to talk about their experience we would be grateful.
Also if anyone is having problems with their home study, or has any queries concerning intercountry adoption please come along and we will do our best to assist.
We will also be planning our next seminar and your input as to subject matter would be very useful.
Hope to see you there!
(This is a free event – tea & coffee will be provided)

W.I.S.E. UP – POWERBOOK
HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU GET ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ADOPTION?

OASIS has a number of the W.I.S.E. Up Powerbook for sale, remaining from the very successful seminar in the Spring. The book is produced by The Centre for Adoption Support and Education based in the USA.
The aim of the book is to empower adopted children (and their families!) to deal with some of the intrusive/curious questions they are asked in everyday life. After reading this book, children should be able to make a choice about how they want to handle each situation, and decide just how much information they wish to share (if any) about adoption or their adoption story.

The children who attended the seminar discussed W.I.S.E. Up in detail, and also carried out role play demonstrating their understanding of it. I know for a fact that my own daughter has actually put some of it into practice and felt quite comfortable with what she was saying.
The book does have guidance notes for parents to use when working with their children. If you would like a copy they are £12 each plus £1pp. (A lot cheaper than Amazon!).

Please email Sally de Jongh at baxter114@hotmail.com for details on ordering.
